Based on a new series
of fantasy novels by Naomi Novik. They are set during the Napoleonic Wars, with
the added dimension of aerial combat fought from the backs of fighting dragons.
What a different concept!
Finished the first 3 books and thoroughly
enjoyed them. They follow the adventures of Captain Will Laurence and Temeraire,
the dragon he unexpectedly bonds with when a dragon egg found aboard a captured
French ship hatches aboard Laurence's ship. Laurence is swept from his life as a
British naval captain into an uncertain future as a member of the Aerial Corps
and master of the huge dragon.
The
movie rights have been optioned by Peter Jackson, the
director of The Lord of the Rings. "As I was reading these books, I could see
them coming to life in my mind's eye," Jackson said. "These are beautifully
written novels, not only fresh, original and fast-paced, but full of wonderful
characters with real heart." I agree and think the story would make a
great movie—or
even better a series of movies.
