Thalia - Guardian Of Stories And Poetry

Adopted From Amanda's Castle

Lore and legend play a vital role in the history of any country. In many cultures the oral traditions were very strong. Before writing and books, there were the storytellers. It was the storytellers who passed on the history, stories and legends of a people and maintained continuity from generation to generation.

In ancient times, storytellers would travel from place to place, exchanging their stories for a meal, a bed and, hopefully, a few loose coins. They were enthusiastically welcomed wherever they went, whether it was at a cottage, an inn or a campfire. For they carried inside of them a precious gift -- the myths, magic and legends of a people.

Skilled and well practiced storytellers were considered artists. And respect for the art kept stories as pure as possible over the years; promoting the evolution of stories to legends and legends to truth. The repetition of a story again and again using the same words, rhythm and tone of voice lent credence to its being a "true story".

Some of the elements perpetuated in these tales include:  a quest, innocence, monetary poverty, physical beauty. The intervention (for good or evil) of otherworldly beings is another common element. And often the mortal or mortals in a story have some moral lesson they have to learn or a reward to be gained from their selfless behavior.
